Futures and foresight techniques

What is futures thinking?

Futures thinking refers to informed and systematic reflection on major changes that might occur at least ten or more years in the future – and the consequences these might have.

Though the tools and methodologies used in futures thinking are diverse, ‘futures techniques’ can be categorised according to whether they are used for:

  • Gathering intelligence about the future
  • Exploring factors that might drive change – and how these interact
  • Mapping out possible futures and what they might look like
  • Developing and testing policy and strategy in the light of an uncertain future
