What is futures thinking?
Futures thinking refers to informed and systematic reflection on major changes that might occur at least ten or more years in the future – and the consequences these might have.
Though the tools and methodologies used in futures thinking are diverse, ‘futures techniques’ can be categorised according to whether they are used for:
- Gathering intelligence about the future
- Exploring factors that might drive change – and how these interact
- Mapping out possible futures and what they might look like
- Developing and testing policy and strategy in the light of an uncertain future
